Reports in the press indicate that targeted Jewish synagogue Websites in Chicago may have been visited numerous times in recent weeks by individuals in Egypt. Law Enforcement sources haven’t released much in the way of hard information yet but indications are that the explosive devices and approach strongly resemble other attacks launched by AQAP (Al Queda in the Arabian Peninsula). Understanding and analysis of site visitor traffic may have unfortunately risen to additional prominence as a result. Retailers, service providers and others have long viewed analytics as the key to developing a deeper understanding of site visitors. Until recently, “defensive” analytics have been largely focused on competitor analysis (lightweight industrial espionage) and nation to nation Web disruption activity. Using every tool at our disposal to address terrorist threats should be our collective objective.
For another take on problem Website traffic, check out John Shin’s blog on “creepy” crawlers – posted just in time for Halloween. While helping one of our clients evaluate an unusual site performance problem, John found that more than half of our client’s daily traffic was being generated by search engine crawlers – the biggest culprit was their internal Google Search Appliance – woof. In this case, visitor-centric Web analytics alone were not sufficient for uncovering the phantom traffic and understanding its impact on the visitor experience. And, they may not be sufficient for understanding what’s happening with your site either…
