Client:

Founded in 1915, Geisinger Health System (Geisinger) has evolved into one of the nation's leading fully integrated healthcare providers, serving more than two million residents throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania.

Challenge:

When it comes to the Internet, Geisinger leverages SiteExecutive as the content management platform for its main institutional Website: www.geisinger.org, its medical education Website: www.geisinger.edu and a massive intranet, known as INFOweb. Serving as the homepage and knowledge repository for Geisinger's 12,000 employees, INFOweb delivers over four million page views per month.

In early 2007, Dave Young, the program director for Web Services at Geisinger, was challenged by Sue Brown, Geisinger's director of Clinical Content Management, to enhance INFOweb so that it would provide a centralized mechanism for creating and managing the organization's thousands of policies and procedures. This would help eliminate duplication and inconsistencies, and reduce the effort involved in locating needed documentation.

Beyond establishing a more efficient process for managing the lifecycle of policies and procedures, Brown's requirements were driven by regulations and guidelines set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Joint Commission, a not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies hospitals and health programs across the United States.  Specifically, Geisinger was required to have in place a mechanism for ensuring all policies and procedures would be reviewed and approved for use on an annual basis.

Solution:

After investigating commercially available policy and procedure management software products, Geisinger realized that with SiteExecutive, the application's content management capabilities could be extended to provide the policy and procedure management functionality.
